Cross-country skiing in western Norway |
A major sport in the Winter Olympics, this sport is practiced as a hobby in Canada and Northern Europe either as long-distance skiing only or as a complement to biathlon.
In addition to the Winter Olympic Games, long-distance skiing competitions are held among other championships, the most famous of which is the World Cup for long-distance skiing, which is an annual competition that takes place weekly throughout the winter months, and the dual shooting and long-distance skiing championships that are held in odd years. The last championship was organized in 2005.
The length of the race varies according to the season in which the race is held and whether the contestant is male or female. Usually there are agreed international numbers, which are:
Spring individual race 1 km for women and 2 km for men.
Spring race for women's 10 km and men's 15 km teams.
Winter individual race 10 km for women and 15 km for men.
Winter race for teams 30 km for women and 50 km for men.
This hobby and sport originated in the Scandinavian countries. The length of the sled attached to the foot is 2 meters and its thickness is 5 cm. The contestant carries in his hands two thin poles, usually made of aluminum, with a sharp end.
